This work entitled Brief investigations into the self-maintenance of a 1-dimensional autopoietic "cell" structure was submitted as coursework for the Adaptive Systems module of EASy MSc, Sussex University, April 2008.

It is a full re-implementation of Ono, N. and Ikegami, T. (2000), Self-maintenance and Self-reproduction in an Abstract Cell Model, J. theor. Biol., vol 206, pp243-253.

Abstract

The aim is to briefly investigate an existing abstract cell model which can be said to embody autopoietic organisation in 1 dimension. A concrete quantitative handle is sought on how the self-maintenance process comes about in this instance.

Note: The JAVA code requires the JFreeChart libraries from www.jfree.org/jfreechart/ to work correctly.

Additionally, I wrote my own notes on the autocatalytic network in the model (and the rates at which these reactions happen), the kinetic aspect to the reactions and the discrete dynamical system underlying the model.
